Fillings Made From High-end Materials
Amalgam has been used as filling material for a long time, but is now being questioned due to its containing of mercury. It must not be used for pregnant patients, patients with kidney diseases or patients with allergy and should not be used for children. Since patients are confused by controversial discussions, we decided from the beginning of practicing not to use amalgam.
Recently, a lot of high-quality materials have been developed. They are tooth colored and fulfill contemporary aesthetic standards. Those composites are made from a synthetic framework with ceramic filling material and can be anchored in the tooth adhesively. The procedure is laborious and time consuming, even small mistakes in this treatment result in loss of quality. In order to expand teeth surface,
a special acid is applied on enamel and dentine and chemical adhesion promoting improves connection of tooth and filling material. The material is installed in small portions and hardened with UV light layer by layer. The tooth ought to be protected from saliva during the entire treatment. Subsequently, polishing and fluoridation is performed.
Inlays can be made as gold cast filling or ceramic filling by dental technicians. During the first session, caries is removed from the tooth, and a temporary arrangement is implemented; during the second session, the actual inlay is put into place.
A special cofferdam helps removing an old defect amalgam filling. Thus, small grinding particles cannot enter your mouth or be swallowed down.
German public insurance subsidises special fillings (composites) depending on the range of cost of the amalgam filling. Gold or ceramic inlays are similarly subsidised.
In order to notice caries in their initial stage, we make use of a diagnodent pen. This device examines teeth with a special laser technology. This approach is suited for children or pregnant women as it operates without x-ray and enables a minimal invasive caries treatment.
Fibre-optic transillumination allows us to illuminate teeth and discover hidden caries in interdental spaces. Especially, children like to work with this small "flashlight".
High definition digital pictures of bite-wings facilitate diagnosing.
